Lab activity

The Laboratory for analysis of geological materials (LaGEMA) performs analyses of minerals, rocks, soils and water for educational, scientifi c and professional purposes. Integral parts of the laboratory are chemical, mineralogical and petrological sections.
Samples can be analyzed using instrumental (X-ray powder diffraction, atomic absorption or emission spectroscopy, ion chromatography), chemical, physical and optical methods.
The primary activities of the laboratory are: (I) mineralogical and petrographical analyses of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks; (II) determination of qualitative, semiquantitative and quantitative mineral composition of rocks, sediments, soils as well as others geological materials; (III) determination of crystallographic parameters of respective minerals; (IV) trace element analysis; (V) cation and anion analysis in water and water leacheates; (VI) chemical analyses; (VII) determination of exchangeable cations in the soil and clay; (VIII) grain size analysis; (IX) determination of water absorption, volumetric weight, density and porosity; (X) sample preparation for the analyses (drying, crushing, dispersion, sieving, extraction, dissolution, separation, microscopic sample preparation).
