Short description of the project:

Project „VIRTULAB- Integrated laboratory for primary and secondary raw materials“ will establish a virtual research center by integrating and equipping 15 existing laboratories with 5 components of the University of Zagreb from the sector of nonenergetic primary and secondary raw materials. Project Virtulab is aligned with the main ideas of the EIT KIC Raw materials consortium in which the University of Zagreb participates as an associate partner. Virtu-laboratories deal with research, exploitation, refining, production processes and replacement materials and raw materials. The project is planned as a central interdisciplinary support for industrial partners from the mining, geology, geological and geotechnical engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgy and food technology sectors. The establishment of a virtual research center for primary and secondary raw materials will strengthen scientific-research work at faculties and raise the quality of teaching, will allow equal participation in the EIT Raw materials consortium, and at the same time will create a space for the commercialization results of scientific research and the practical application of innovation in the economy.
An important aspect of the study that will be carried out within VIRTULAB relates to the possibility of practical application of the results of the research on:

  • recycling and reuse of raw materials for the needs of the economy
  • improving the usability of non-energy raw materials
  • optimize and increase the quality and recovery of materials
  • reduced energy use

Objectives and expected results of the project:

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to improving the availability and utilization of primary and secondary raw materials in the Republic of Croatia and the European Union, and create a positive impact on the environment and the economy.
The specific objective of the project is to improve the teaching and scientific research capacities of five components of the University of Zagreb in the sector of primary and secondary raw materials by establishing an Integrated laboratory for primary and secondary raw materials in order to achieve EU and global standards with practical application in the economy.

Expected results of the project are:

  • Established VIRTULAB - Integrated Laboratory for Primary and Secondary Raw Materials
  • Related and mutually integrated laboratory five faculties of the University of Zagreb through organizational reform
  • Improved teaching quality
  • Strengthened competencies of students and increase their employability
  • Increased number of employees in the economic sector in the observed economic life of the project
  • Achieved at least five patents per year
  • Increased participation in the projects financed from EU funds
