The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) was established in 2008 as a research and development agency of the European Union with a view to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the sectors of strategic importance for the European Union. EIT operational units are Knowledge and Innovation Communities, which have the role of joining the industry and small and medium entrepreneurs with research centers and higher education institutions from the priority sectors. EIT is an integral part of the Horizon2020 program and is funded by the European Commission.
Knowledge and Innovation Community EIT RawMaterials was established in 2015 and is the largest consortium in the raw material sector worldwide. The consortium consists of 125 partners from more than 20 EU countries, one third of which are academic institutes, one third research institutes and one third the companies. EIT RawMaterials is operationally divided into six Collocation Centers (CLCs), whereby the University of Zagreb belongs to CLC East with headquarters in Wroclaw, Poland. The mission of EIT RawMaterials is to increase competitiveness and stimulate the sustainable growth of the European raw materials sector with the aim of providing the European Union industry with a secure supply throughout the value chain. EIT RawMaterials consortium projects and programmes are aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, developing new technologies and innovative solutions and developing educational programs of all levels.
